If the Whitman home was big, then the Delano house was huge. Every house in their gated community was sizeable, but theirs dwarfed them all. Set on a couple acres of land, the house was approached by a long driveway. The front facade was white, with the obligatory columns found on the kitsch homes of the absurdly rich.

Matching Mercedes SUVs were hidden in a garage off to one side, that was big enough to house a small nation. The approach was designed to make people feel small and insignificant. And unwelcome unless they had business there.

Aldous scoffed at the excess. Once upon a time, he had looked on the man who had been his supervising physician at the hospital during his internship with awe and respect. He had wanted to be just like Dr. Delano, with his expensive car and high manners. Aldous had even gone as far as mimicking the old man's attitude towards women in their field. When he had been invited with the old man the first charity trip to Bangkok after his residency, it seemed like the old man had actually liked him.

But as the years went by, things changed. Aldous was only good for making Dr. Delano look good. The top surgeon with his protege son-in-law, out to make the world a better place.

The hospital board ate that shit up. It earned doctor Delano the position of chairman on the board of directors. When he retired, Aldous was given a seat and Delano had insured both their statuses. All for appearance's sake.

He hated everything his father-in-law stood for, now. The power plays, the dealings under the table. Using people as pawns in the sick, twisted games that the bored liked to play with other peoples' lives. Aldous had learned those games from the best. Dr. Delano had been a good teacher.

He pulled up the driveway and stepped towards the front door with purpose in his eyes. He rang once, and then proceeded to knock as obnoxiously as he could.

The door opened a crack. The hostile face of Isabella Delano looked out at him.

"Whaddya want?" She spoke perfectly English, but even after sixty years in America, she still had an Italian accent.

"My children. Give them back. Now." His eyes were narrowed and icy as his fingers tightened around the handle of his medical bag.

"No. You can't control your wife. How are you supposed to raise children? Those sweet children need better than that environment." She curled her lip as though she found he and Faye filthy.

"And you think you're any better? Move, Isabella. You don't take kids away from their mother just because she fucks around while they're at school." If they did, half of America would be orphans.

Her eyes narrowed. She grunted softly.

"No one embarrasses the Delanos. She's shamed us. She's shamed you. And she sullied her home by cavorting with a…man like that! It's disgusting. The children won't be going anywhere until he's…taken care of."

"Right…" He couldn't believe the shit she was spewing. They were so classist and racist, it would have been funny.
